I have the same question! like that 60 credit points are for health science right? and you need a total of 144 credit points to finish the WHOLE bachelor of health science right? or ashvon is that the second major, (in my case) : French. i will need to get 54 credits points of unit from that? I got confused about how many credit points i should get for French studies.

and also like you say are we just do anything with the left over credit points from any subjects??

The total amount of CP's needed to fufill a BHS is 144. 60 of those are from the BHS subjects and then you need to figure out how many CP's you need to qualify for a major in French. Jump on the Arts website and find the link to the French studies page and see what they say in regards to how many points is needed to major in French.

For Psych, you need to do a certain amount of subjects and credit points in your intermediate and senior years to qualify for a major. It just happens to be something like 54 in this case. French may be different so jump on the website and look it up becasue you want to make sure you qualify for your second major. It says something on the BHS enrollment PDF that the rest of the CP's are made up of electives of your choice throughout the uni. So, I am assuming that as long as you meet the requirements for your BHS core plus your second major, the rest can be whatever. I am thinking of doing something like art history hahahah

Also alphaisanidiot, the German at USYD is reallly good. I did German when I did arts and loved it. The culture side is more like learning about the Germanic countries and things like that. There are good film units there as well.

So many typos in that hahaha

What day are you guys enrolling on? It's a trek to get out there for me, so I'm kinda happy i'll be at main campus hahah

I'm going to do a psych major. I really wanted to do it plus I have friends who have majored in it and tell me the courses are really good (bar statistics yuk). I'm going into my first year of health sciences but I started off as an arts student at usyd.

I have a question too brownie. Your health science units take up about 60 credit points from what you have to do and say your major (to qualify) takes up 54 credit points, can you jsut do anything with the left over credit points from any subject offered at the uni?
Yes! You can virtually do any unit of study you want with the leftover units and from ANY faculty (though in some faculties there are restrictions. For example you cant do accounting from the faculty of economics and business for some reason). Thats why I think the degree is so good, because you arent restricted at all. You just have to make sure you remember to do the 4 senior health science units in years 2 and 3 (its better to get them over and done within one year if possible so you have plenty of space in third year - but that isnt always possible due to differing major requirements).

wow you did commerce at UNSW and now doing BHS and thinking to go to med? :O
yep. loved science, but didn't know what to do with myself so i picked commerce i knew you can always combine it with whatever...

i also talked to countless lecturers, staff, doctors, registrars etc they all told me biggest flaw of doctors is lack of business mind that they're too introvert and sciency, when ive always been told i got the mouth of a lawyer, business minded etc. so i figured i could combine the two?

problem is i almost never really studied in commerce until towards the end, so i just fell short of the 65 wam required to get straight into grad medicine.
meaning i gotta do an entire undergrad degree and maintain cr average which is starting to turn me off medicine but hey thats a long story lol.
im not here to tell people my life story, just curious since i missed medical science, i love sport science (always reading up on pubmed) i put app science (exercise and sport science), but incase i miss that there is vacanies in b health science i thought i wanted to give that degree a shot and if anyone has considered it as a good precurser to medicine, or at least a good indicator

from what i read b med sci is repeated in grad medicine, as well as that i'm taking on a few offers to do work experience with an anaesthesiologist and hopefully another specialist (i think endocronology) might help me decide better my path...

For example you cant do accounting from the faculty of economics and business for some reason). Thats why I think the degree is so good, because you arent restricted at all.
get shot
get eaten alive
re do your hsc blind folded

but do NOT do accounting. trust me when i say this, insanely boring the core subjects litrelly sent me into a coma. i would go to lectures with 8-9 hours sleep night before, a nice clean breakfast, and would somehow fall asleep in lecturers. i honestly think its a great natural remedy to sleep pills, go to an accounting lecture. only lecture that kept me captivated was all my gen eds from faculty of sciene/medicine and my business law major subjects

edit: just read you CANT do accounting woops. well think of it as a blessing trust me.

in saying that, isn't this degree only 3 years? t he usyd site confused the hell out of me

according to usyd site it is a cool choice for premed students according to:
http://www.fhs.usyd.edu.au/forms/bhs_enrolment_information.pdf

this is actually a really good degree. if icould go back to 2006 i would of began this degree because i could of combined my love for science with a finance/banking or business law major which would of been sweet. now ill have to conjure up another major, hmm neurolgy

Casmira thats really cool, following ure dreams and do the best you can, i reckon you'd be a good doctor! :)

Im quite interested in Anatomy myself too, seems really interetsing, learning the structure of humans etc, but can you tell me if that can be ure second major too? if it does, what faculty should i look at? Im in between choosing French studies or Anatomy. of course anatomy seems more reasonable since we are doing health science, but i dont wanna missed a chance to study french, otherwise i will have to learn in at TAFE or something private schools.

hmmmm yeaa i guess i'll see you guys in Oweek and in class :) by the way im a boy im using my cousin's account lol

why do we need to go cumberland? isnt health science is taught in main campus, aghhh and do we have the same O week with everyone else? like will we be in cumberland campus for Oweek or in the main campus? confused.:jump:

The first year of BHS is taught at main campus and the faculty of health science has O week activities at both campuses. You will be given more information at enrolment, but when I went to O week there was a tour around main campus for BHS people where you got a tour of the campus with other students from BHS (definitely a good opportunity to make friends). There were also various o week activities at Cumberland campus. You can pretty much go to whatever aspects of O week interest you though!

its howandwhen not howandthen :D
anyway thats awesome! now ive been asking friends opinion and they all said Anatomy and Histology is MUCH better than French, they said i can self-taught and learn it later in life. where anatomy is much related to 'health science' degree... Argh such a big decision! Do i need to make that decision on enrolment day? im on wednesday afternoon :(
and also, Do we need to pay the student contribution on that day?

WOW i just read about stuff on the commonwealth supported place, do i need to enroll as a Commonwealth supported student on usyd enrollment day for 2010 or do people already enrolled ages ago? i seriously cant afford to pay that much and i can only pay the student contribustion something like that, which is $5,602 for a year! im pretty new to here so i'd appreciate someone can give me little hint what to do. :(

You will be enrolled as a commonwealth supported student on enrolment day. All Australian domestic students are commonwealth supported. If you choose to pay the contribution upfront you get a 20% discount which makes the fees for the semester ~$2000 (just an estimation). If you cant pay your fees upfront, you could always defer them (HECS) and pay it off in chunks/when you start working.

And Casmira, I havent heard of anyone doing a minor - youd have to enquire about that but I dont think its possible.

Is it possible to pay the fees for Semester 1 & 2, but then defer from Year 2 onwards onto HECS?

Hey Howandwhen. I'm also starting BHS this year. I was going to major in German but decided against it because you not only have to study the language subjects which is fine, but also things like German culture, literature and history etc. Im sure it's similar to how the French major is structured. I now wish to major in Psychology or anatomy because they relate more to what I might want to do after the BHS.

Hope to see you at enrolment/O-week/in class :)
Hey Alphasianidiot, I was just wondering the Anatomy you talked about is it from the faculty of Science? ANATOMY & HISTOLOGY?
i have talked to my family and friends they ALL think doing something related to health science would be a wiser choice, and i have looked up on usyd website. it seems the only anatomy course the offer? it says in the 1st year we cant do any anatomy subjects but Chem,Phy,Bio and Maths. :( i just survive HSC chem and bio now have to do it again and with my biggest fear maths!!! (i only did general maths in HSC)

Brownie: Do you think it is better then doing french considering later on for the DR? my freinds they all tell me that french can be self taught and learn in outside school later on in life. anatomy seems more relevant and all that,.. ummm am sorry bothering everyone here so much, i'll buy everyone lunch when uni starts!!!

p.s.

My advice would be to choose a major youre interested in and has relevance to what you want to do. Seeing as you want to do DR, anatomy and histology would be of a greater use to you when you start that course. Remember, you could always choose French units as electives instead of dedicating a whole major to them!

:O OH! you are not joking!!!! so i can actually pick my second major as anatomy and STILL PICK FRENCH studies for my elective?! like still learning french! Whoaaa thats a win win situation lol i guess i'll just need to ask them on enrollment day for more details!!! :):spin:

Yep I planned on majoring in anatomy and histology through Faculty of Science. To do anatomy subjects in 2nd year and start the major you need 12 junior (first year) credit points of psychology or biology, and seeing as psyc1001 is a must do in first sem, I figure I'll choose to do psyc1002 in 2nd semester and have the requirements to do a major in anatomy.
I also only did general maths in HSC and biology so you're not alone. I dropped Chem in yr 11..
But the advisors on enrolment day will help with any questions you have and map out what subjects you need to do depending on which major you choose I think. :)

it says on the website that FIRST YEAR:
The study of anatomy and histology does not begin until second year. In first year, students are advised to study maths, biology and chemistry and one other subject of choice. >?

So with B HS, what do we deal with that? personally i would be really grateful if i dont have to do maths cause i knew im gonna survive 2 unit maths or something.
because in the 1st year sem 1 we are already doing Foundations of Health Science HSBH1006, Health Science & Research HSBH1007, Human Biology BIOL1003
and Psychology PSYC1001. Where do we have extra time and unit for Maths, chem and one other subjects of choice?

Yes, you can still do French as an elective! Electives can be anything, completely unrelated to health science and your major so you just choose subjects which you think you will enjoy. What you really need to do for anatomy is look at the prerequisites for the senior units of study in the anatomy major and see what you need to progress to these subjects. This should be available in the faculty of science handbook, available on the Usyd website. BIOL1003, Im pretty certain, will count towards an anatomy major and any other subjects you require could be done in semester 2 (where you have 2 subject spaces after HSBH1008 and HSBH1009). I know its possible to fit the subjects in, as a couple of people I know of are doing a major in anatomy.

Howandwhen believe me when I say you do not need to do any maths, phys, chem to do a major in anatomy. I have looked at the senior units of anatomy and the prereq subjects we need to have done to do them, and you only need 12 jnr credit points (2 subjects) of either psychology, biology, or archaeology. Here is an example of an intermediate anatomy subject you might do in 2nd year as part of your major that says this. Unit of study: ANAT2009 - Comparative Primate Anatomy - University of Sydney
Stress less, you do NOT have to do maths. And if you're still not convinced, ask the advisors tomorrow or whenever your enrolment is.
Also what you read about maths, phys, chem and bio in first year is in relation to medical science students who have to do a whole first year of those to progress in their degree and pick their majors. We in health science dont have to do those. They don't particularly relate to specific majors like anatomy, they're just so med sci students have a grounding in all science.

About Orientation Week:

Other campuses - Current students - The University of Sydney

if you look at that page you'll see that BHS students have to go to the cumberland campus on the 23rd and Camperdown on the 24th

Ill be in BHS this year too, see you all at uni! :)
