and won't lag/make obnoxious noises..?

I don't game, but I do watch movies.

And also something somewhat lightweight.

Any recommendations?

Also I don't care for battery life, as long as its 3 hrs or longer.

I think Macbooks have the longest battery life.
not really. it depends upon the battery ur using. macbooks claims that their laptop lasts for 6hrs but u'll never get to the 6hr mark. compare that to one of these mini laptops with a 15 cell battery, then ur set to lose.

anyways, try to avoid getting sony or macbooks if ur on a budget. since these costs alot and ur not getting the performance u deserve. But these laptops are light, especially macbook air.

If u don't really need to do anything with ur laptop other than watching movies then why not consider those mini laptops which costs around $500. these are small, light, cheap, has long battery life, and "won't lag/make obnoxious noises" (they might lag if u suddenly decides to play games that is like a few gigs since these use intel atom processors, but u'll be fine with most games anyways since my friend got one and he plays games on it all the time).

Yeah I was thinking of getting a Toshiba NB200, an Asus or a HP Mini but I wasn't sure if could handle movie length good quality files..

Yeah, a small notebook is a good option if you aren't looking for gaming because they usually have sup par video cards anyway. I recommend the HP Mini 311 (I have this for work and probably will take it to uni). It has 5 hours battery life running video and the graphics are pretty good. Might want to upgrade the ram though.

Do you know if the HP Mini 110 series plays flash and xvid files fine? I've seen the 10 inch ones at Harvey norman and according to the site it has the HP mini 311 but I haven't seen it at my local store..

my asus eee 1000h survived being in my school bag every day and being thrown around, including being dropped from my locker. small crack in the corner but nothing super glue couldn't repair.

Highly recommend one from the eee series. Liliputing — Compact Computing is a great website for netbook news

dont get acer.

get a macbook if u can afford it and if you know how to use an OSX operating system.

asus are good, but they have good graphcis cards, meaning they chew up battery.

toshiba are good, dell are apparently not good because of their customer service or something? But as long as you can look after a laptop then i see no problem with dell.

Asus is good - but you pay a lot, maybe $1400 for 1.6ghz dual core - not worth it.

I have never used OSX, but can adapt quickly - that is what I shall do!

Don't touch a Mac, you're paying more for something worse than what you could get for the same price if you bought with Toshiba, Acer, Asus, Dell, HP etc.

I'd recommend just getting a netbook and you'd be fine, they range from about $350-$600 depending on the specs but I'd also recommend adding another gig of ram into it

I personally would choose a Mac, preferably a 13 inch macbook pro, as I have found them to be more reliable than the Toshibas and Acers that I have owned. My macbook has quite often been running continously (no restart) for over a month without problems. The screens on them are decent quality, so your movies will look better than on most netbooks. The battery life is also quite good, as I have managed to get about 6 and a half hours out of the battery on mine (playing music mostly). There are two things which as a general rule should be considered before buying one, which are gaming (not applicable though as you don't game), and the price difference between a Mac and a comparable Windows based machine (Which isn't too much if you buy a decent brand, which you should be doing). Also, I think that having less problems (and the annoyance & money spending which they entail) is worth paying a little extra at the beginning.

Otherwise, I will do what the others have been doing and recommend a netbook.

Only get a mac if you're planning on using it for what it's been made for.

If you'll simply be using it for word processing and academic school or uni work, you have no need for the other features that a mac offers, and charge more for.

GTFO seriously. Macbook pro 13 inch costs $1400 while an ASUS N51VN A1 Which has slightly better specs is approx. $1000. Seriously look things up before making outlandish claims.

Netbook is a good choice if you can handle watching movies on a 10 inch screen. I can and don't mind the size of it really, but some of my friends can't handle watching something on such a small screen :p
