I don't get it. I would have thought that in terms of being the socialist/darlings of the left Chifley and Whitlam would have it allover Keating. If its the inspirational, patriotic icon stuff then Curtin would be labors greatest prime minister and if its the man of the people thing you look for then it would be Bob Hawke. How does Keating end up being the lefts nominee for no1pm?
Im not a leftie. I am a rationalist. Paul Keating's policys are rationally derived with a focus on the future and the big picture. This is really the best policy to have but it often takes time for the masses to understand what your doing and why your doing it. Rudd needs to study Keating more.

Ok it does add up in your case but not many politically interested people are inspired by middle ground rationalism and yet Keating does appear to have assumed Jim Cairns old title as the darling of the left.

1. Rudd is as much a smart arse in parliament as Keating is, Keating was just ruder.
Nope. Rudd is calm, and boring. Doesn't insult much and sticks to the answer most of the time.

Nothing like Keating.

I like Rudd for many reasons. That's not to say I think he's perfect, by any means. There are a lot of things I disagree with him on. But for as long as I can remember, John Howard was in power. And, imo, Rudd is a whole lot better that Howard.

Yes Rudd is calm and he isn't rude. The differences end about there.

Ruddisms:(lines i've heard him mutter at the dispatch box)
To Turnbull:
"The member for goldman sachs, the leader of the opposition"
"He could, infact he probably has hired every environmental advisor in Australia and still take his cues from Heifer"
"The leader of the opposition and the shadow treasurer attempting to explain their position to the liberal partyroom could best be described as the lost leading the blind"
"Don't worry Malcolm you'll get to throw your two cents in, (Albo:Two cents?) well I doubt he'd be willing to part with any more than that"
"It would far more useful for the parliament to hear the member for O'conners views on the matter as he is far more likely to lead the liberal party to the next election than the member for Wentworth"

On Julie Bishop:
"I thank the minister for finance and deregulation for his question, well I'm pretty sure he wrote originally Mr speaker"
"I'd began to wonder if the deputy leader of the opposition was still allowed to speak during question"
"Jules the grown ups are speaking"

On Costello:
"Captain courageous over there, the would be prime minister without any intestinal fortitude whatsoever. Mr I would like to be prime minister but whoops I'll sit back and let it pass me by again"
"He has lived all his life to challenge labor party politics but will forever be too much of a coward to take on the leadership of his party where he might be able to do something about it"

Those quotes show no wit, no acerbism. Just the rantings of a sad, angry man who has a pathological desire to be loved by everyone. Only Costello comes anywhere near Keating in the wit stakes.

Haha. That's a keeper. Nah his stuff seems too pre-rehearsed. He therefore lacks wit. Costello and Keating looked like they improvised far, far more. It's as if he's not a smart arse, but his writers are.

Keating's wit was a myth. Over a career in politics that spanned three decades he was nasty and belligerent all day and every day. From which a handful of very clever lines can be discovered and a mountain of crap. Pour over a random days hansard instead of youtubes greatest keating moments and see how dashing he was.

Keating was sure as fuck better than Costello, but Keating was nonetheless a grumpy asshole.

i dunno, i clicked a random example

Dr HEWSON —My question is directed to the Prime Minister. Seeing the Prime Minister does not know what these standards are, I am keen to see whether he has adhered to them. I refer the Prime Minister to his predecessor's statement on public duty and private interests, which says

in respect of individual minister's income, assets or liabilities, that ministers have `declared those amounts to me in a confidential statement'. I therefore ask the Prime Minister: whilst he was Treasurer, did he so disclose to his predecessor in a confidential statement that in May 1991 he had purchased the shares in the Parkville piggery?

Mr KEATING —There is nothing lower than a Liberal Party leader who knows that he has gone. It is a particularly low form of political life. He has tried everything in his armoury and here he is hanging on a gossamer thread in his own party. He said that he was going to be above politics; he was going to be honest; and he was going to give us a new order of political behaviour. But he is back to the oldest Liberal Party trick in the business, down to the personal interests of MPs, in particular mine.

Yesterday the Leader of the Opposition was clearing the party room of staff. He told those opposite that they all had to grow up. Within half an hour they nearly broke their shins and their ankles getting out to the radio stations and the newspapers to tell the world about the joke which had just been their party meeting. This is his standing, Mr Speaker. He has no idea of leadership, no idea of policy and no idea whatsoever about what he thinks—

Dr Hewson —Mr Speaker, I raise a point of order under standing order 145 on relevance. I asked a very specific question as to whether the Prime Minister met a certain standard in filing a confidential report to the Prime Minister at the time in relation to his investment in a piggery. It should have a very direct answer.

Mr SPEAKER —The Prime Minister was referring to ministerial interests.

Mr KEATING —I declared my interests to the former Prime Minister whenever he required them of me, which was on every occasion. I discussed my interest in that investment in the piggery with the former Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, extensively. I purchased it one week before I resigned my position as Treasurer. The whole world knows it because I declared it in parliament and I declared it in my register. Let me say to those opposite that there is a whole lot I could declare about the Leader of the Opposition and the rest of those opposite. If they wish me to, I am quite happy to go through their personal affairs one after the other.

1/4 of wit is indicated by what is said. The rest, 3/4 of wit, is demonstrated by how it is said (tone of voice, loudness, facial expressions, gestures etc).

That's bullshit. By that reckoning the infamous Keating lip drum, where he was saying nothing was one of the wittiest moments in parliamentary history?

broseph, relax your balls, I was not into Australian politics when Keating was PM, seeing as I was between non-existent and the age of three during his time. I am only explaining the elements of wit.

Don't ever call me broseph again. And as merely as you were saying what you said I was merely saying that it was bullshit.
