yeh, but if you work out with dumbells, and you don't bring them up and lower them in the exact same way for both arms, it can have the exact same effect as using a barbell.smooth motion yes, but with both arms involved, ESPECIALLY with machines, you will most likely apply a greater force with your stronger arm, resulting in an uneven workout.
