hey there...

i'm looking for a poem about belonging for a related text and i'm really struggling to find a decent one...does anybody know of any ideas??
I'm doing these texts, but I'll probably add some more during the year:
Romulus, My Father by Raimond Gaita
Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
The Retreaters by Sharlene Miller Brown
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S Eliot
Lord of the Flies
The Catcher in the Rye
any Oscar Wilde Stuff - I was thinking "Ballad of Reading Gaol," "Picture of Dorian Grey" or "The Happy Giant"
biography of Helen Keller
biography of Steven Hawkings
The Floating World (play)

We have to do Dicki too. I thought for "I Died for Beauty" that she was talking about how Truth and Beauty are NOT timeless things but are ideals of society: she is saying that these things - which are the ULTIMATE belongers - will eventually fail, and that it is rather pointless to identify yourlself with beloning to superficial things tht will 'die.'

I know this is a big post but you guys have given me some great ideas and I wanted to thank you!!!

Re: Emily Dickinson

This is my letter to the World:

- Poem is iambic, meaning the rythm is that of speech
- Capitalisation of words = emphasis
- Second line; "That never wrote to me", suggests that she is neglected by the world. Also an example of disconnection from society.
- "Her Message is committed To Hands I cannot see" = she doesn't really know who she's writing to, it's more of dictation of her thoughts.

Sorry if there isn't much, I really didn't like the poem at all

I had been hungry, all the Years:

- Poem is iambic
- Main reference of hunger, desire, wanting something (longing to belong)
- First stanza explains how time has come for her to get a "taste" of what she hungers for
- Second stanza explains how she had been rejected from her desire in the past (example of not belonging)
- Third stanza explains how she is tasting what she wants, experiencing the desires (taste of acceptance?)
- Fourth and fifth stanza shows how she was disappointed after she had finally satisfied her hunger. (disappointment with society)

Emily Dickinson probes the essence of the human condition, exploring the universals associated with life and in particular, death.

Does it have to be about belonging?

Speech!!! Emily Dickinson's poetry and related material.

Im have a speech next monday >"< .
And we have to talk about Emily Dickinson's poetry and
one of your related material.
I'm doing a picture book "Belonging" composed by Jeannie Baker.

PS: We have to talks about the related material techniques to link our concept.
my concept is "As you grow, you develop the ideal of where your true belonging could be - the place, the home, the partner, and the work. You seldom achieve all the elements of the ideal, but it travels with you as the precedent and standard of what true belonging could be. "

And there is not much techniques for the picture book >"< .... Can someone help me for the techniques... and how does is link to E.D's poetery?

Thank you ^ ^

Not all her poems are about alienation - you can actually change alot of it to suit your thesis. I had to study all the prescribed poems (it was horrible) but we only chose two out of all of the poems and i picked "I gave myself to him" and "I had been hungry all the years". In "I gave myself to him" its not all about alienation, although it is a salient point. There is also issues about belonging out of obligation, female submission, opportunities and disapointments in relation to belonging, social expectations etc. While in "I had been hungry all the years" is about finding out that belonging was not all that its cracked up to be. She actually is accepted in this poem, which she then chose to reject because she found that belonging was either, not worth the trouble, did not meet her expectations, or it was just simply too hard for her to conform to belong. of all those points you could use one and develop it fully for your particular thesis.

Anyways - i need to know, for Adv eng, how many related texts do we need for the AOS? i've heard some ppl say two and some ppl say one - i'm really hoping we only need one cuz if we need two we'll have to do 4 texts in one essay O_O (2 of ED's poems and 2 related texts)

emily dickinson.

yeahhh my class are doing emily dickinson too. i was under the impression that all advanced students have to study her work.

anyone have ideas about any of her poems, or any related texts, that work with the following thesis:
one's identity is developed and reinforced by many factors. one of the most influential is one's experience of belonging.

please and thankyou :D.
