Former defence minister and opposition leader Brendan Nelson has quit politics, Liberal sources confirmed to AAP on Monday evening.


I could've sworn Lentern was onto something when he said Nelson could still be elected PM! I wonder if he could possibly be wrong too on his claim that Smith will be next Labor leader?!

He could well have done had the timing been right, as could Smith. if John Howard could come back from where he was in 1990 to be the longest serving prime minister since Menzies Nelson had every chance. As for Smith, I don't think he will be prime minister but had he come to the leadership anytime between 2002 and 2007 he could have won a federal election without much difficulty. But without really showing any criteria you were able to just flick off Nelson as "not prime minister material."

Howard said he wouldn't bring in a GST. He then changed his mind, indicated as such, but waited until after the next election to implement it. The 1998 election was fought on the GST and the people voted in favour of it.

From my encounters with Nelson he seems very genuine, certainly moreso than his replacement.
